How to Use Herbs

Not sure where to start? Each herb listing below includes its traditional uses. Here is what those mean:

Tea - The herb is steeped in hot water to make an herbal infusion. Generally 1–2 teaspoons of dried herb per 8 oz of water, steeped 5–10 minutes covered. Covering your cup while steeping helps hold in the essential oils that give the herb its character.

Culinary - The herb is used in cooking — in spice blends, rubs, sauces, oils, dressings, and more. Dried herbs are more concentrated than fresh, so start with less than you think you need and adjust from there. Generally, 1 teaspoon dried equals 1 tablespoon fresh.

Steam  - A small amount of dried herb is added to a bowl of just-boiled water. Lean over the bowl with a towel draped over your head and breathe slowly through your nose for 5–10 minutes. Traditionally used to support comfortable, open breathing.

Topical  - The herb is applied to the skin, typically as a cooled strong herbal infusion, a poultice, or infused into oil. Always do a small patch test before applying broadly, especially if you have sensitive skin.
